Far from leaving play behind, 12 is an age where pre-teens sharpen the skills they've gained through play in earlier years.  Competitive sports are big in many 12-year-olds' lives.  Growing independence is very important at this age.  Many 12-year-olds begin to babysit, and now their play with the toys of childhood takes on a whole new meaning as they become the play leaders.
