Increased coordination of the body and eye/hand give 8-year-olds new skills.  As their writing skills improve, they enjoy creating books.  The 8-year-old can appreciate quality in suuch playthings as puppets and fantasy figures, which will inspire creativity and dramatic play. Math manipulatives, science kits, and strategy games help with expanding attention spans.
