Whether in preschool or kindergarten, the 5-year-old expands horizons with a new group of peers. It's great fun for them to get together to create their own adventures and story lines.  Encourage reading and making up stories.  This is a good age to introduce scientific and natural materials like magnets, magnifying glasses and simple science kits, and for teaching how to tell time.
